Smart grids need real-time data

Accurate, timely information is crucial for energy distribution system operators when moving toward increasingly smarter electricity networks. Aidon has gained a position as a recognized smart metering and smart grid expert among the Nordic markets by combining advanced technology with customer-driven innovations.

Aidon was born in 2004, at a time when the Nordic market for smart meters was about to open. Based in Finland and holding a strong market position in other Nordic countries, Aidon implements solutions for low-voltage network metering that collects, refines, and utilizes the event data.

Over the decade, the development of the smart grid has increased the importance of smart meters remarkably. Accurate information combined with highly advanced automation has become a product with high demand in diverging electricity markets, knows Timo Chrons, CEO at Aidon.

“With our applications, smart meters can deliver energy companies precise information about the operation of their low- and medium-voltage grids. Passing on information about power cuts becomes more efficient and faults can be fixed faster and with lower costs,” Chrons explains.

“Sweden is our next big market and, beyond that, the entire world is waiting for our service.”

Worsening weather conditions as well as the increasing vulnerability of society underline the importance of reliable electricity distribution. Power cuts can cause severe failures for the important basic functions of society.

“When receiving the information from the low-voltage network, electricity companies will immediately get an up-to-date situation report on a household level. This enables them to focus the repair work to the right areas.”

Customers’ challenges create innovations

Finland is a forerunner in smart metering: nearly 100% of the country’s meters are remotely read smart meters. Similar changeover work is in full swing in Norway where Aidon is carrying out large-scale operations. Sweden, as well as many central and southern European countries, will follow.

“Utilities seem to have spotted the opportunities that open solutions bring about. Sweden is our next big market and, beyond that, the entire world is waiting for us ,” Chrons envisions.

Aidon, as a pioneer company in smart energy metering solutions and smart grid applications, has a clear vision of its success factors.

”A thorough understanding of our customers’ business and operating environment lays the foundation for what we do. This, in combination with our strong technology expertise, provides us with an excellent springboard for using the challenges identified by our customers as sources of innovation,” Chrons concludes.
